Majestic Mount Kazbek peak with Gergeti Trinity Church perched on hilltop, surrounded by dramatic Caucasus mountain landscape

Gates of the Caucasus

To Dariali and Back

This one-day journey takes you deep into the dramatic mountain landscapes of northern Georgia, following the historic Georgian Military Highway toward the northern border. We travel through the Aragvi Valley, stopping at the 17th-century Ananuri Fortress and several scenic viewpoints along the way.

In Kazbegi, we'll visit the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high above the valley with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. From there, we continue into the narrow and strategically vital Dariali Gorge — once considered the gate to the Caucasus. At its northern end, we visit a working monastery that stands as a living presence on the border, where monks are actively engaged in building, carving, painting, and even producing their own wine. Nearby, we explore the ruins of an ancient fortress that overlooks the border with the Russian Federation.

Depending on group interest and timing, it's also possible to hike to Gveleti Waterfall or make a short detour to Sno Valley, known for its striking landscape and stone monuments dedicated to notable Georgian figures.
